Some pictures of the planting days….

Want to shift your perspective? Climb a tree. Not for the act of climbing but to sit up there. We want to shift the perspective of a whole neighborhood, so we’re planting hundreds. The Pilot Arboretum formalizes the tree planting and stewardship that has been going on for generations in our neighborhood. This project is called Treetroit 1 in honor of the long time working title of the arboretum. For years I have called the places I have planted trees Treetroit. This starter arb is 4 lots on the North side of the Farnsworth neighborhood. You know the one - we have an Avalon bread named after us. Treetroit 1 demonstrates the template for future sections.

The trees were mostly planted in trios. Birches, Gingkoes, Red Maples, Cedars, Redbuds, Dogwoods, Yews, Sycamores and the sole Weeping Beech along with the young red pine gifted by a friend joined the company of the three Spruces who have been giving a home to bird and insect life on the corner for decades.

Boulders came to grace the space with their timeless beauty, and a gentle elevation was made in the center.

We are thankful to the volunteers who put their time and sweat into this project, as well as our donors. We also made a friend in US Fish and Wildlife Service, who donated native wildflower and grass seeds to cover the ground with.

We are working on tags for the trees, a sign for the location, benches and a path.

Come visit, wish the trees well.
